124 Park Road, Rosedale’s Second Oldest Home Lists

124 Park Road - Frontdoor Entry

124 Park Road isn’t just a house, it’s a recognized piece of Toronto history that’s been owned and fought by Toronto’s elite for over for a hundred plus years. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of fighting at the $17.7M price tag it’s listed at with Richard Silver, but considering the past it might be a deal.

The History

Commissioned in 1857 by Toronto solicitor James Boyd David (and originally called James Boyd David House), it was built in the Italianate architecture style – extremely popular south of the border at the time. Despite what the listing says, this makes it’s Rosedale’s second oldest home, right after the unfortunately named Drumsnab at 5 Drumbnab Road (built in 1834).

Reginald “Reg” Geary, the city’s mayor from 1910-1912, was the next owner who renamed it “Caverhill” after his spouse Beatrice Caverhill. In 1984 it was purchased by a numbered corporation on behalf of  billionaire David Thompson (of the Thompson-Reuters fame), who disputed with his neighbors about making additions until he sold it in 1994, having never moved in. This may or may not have had something to do with the city designating it a historic site in 1990 and renaming it “Geary House”, it’s present day name.

Details

Despite it’s rich heritage, it’s definitely not a stodgy old place inside. The current owners recently renovated it, maintaining the luxurious millwork but adding all of the luxurious upgrades you would expect from a $17.7M mansion. There’s built in speakers, marble tiled bathrooms, and the works. Curious what the renovation looks like? Check it out below.

It’s insane what some people will pay for nothing special.

Wait, so Thompson purchased it and never moved in? Must be nice to purchase a second $20 million dollar home while the rest of us are fighting over scraps of meat in Toronto.

That’s funny, but seriously. How much does this place *actually* cost?
